If the citizens' protest is suppressed, Georgia risks losing a significant portion of European Union (EU) support, warned MEP Siegfried Mureshan. He said this on the air of the Romanian TV channel Digi 24.
However, the MEP expressed hope that this would not be necessary. "I hope that this will not happen, because we also want to have safe, stable and prosperous states in our neighborhood. But if the impact of undemocratic tendencies in Georgia is noticeable, the EU will be forced to reduce its support," he said.
Mureshan noted that last year Georgia already lagged behind Moldova and Ukraine, but today Tbilisi's problems have become even more noticeable. According to him, the law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" is aimed at intimidating civil society, which is contrary to European standards.
